This Thursday: Abby Johnson addresses audience at UW

In lieu of our own May event this season, the directors of the Chesterton Society have elected to spread the word concerning an event to be held this Thursday, May 3, on the UW campus. Abby Johnson is the former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who underwent a change of heart several years ago. She has now become one of the country’s most effective speakers on behalf of the lives of children and the health of women. Some of you may have heard of, or have read, Unplanned, the remarkable account of her personal history on both sides of the abortion issue.

The directors of the Chesterton Society invite those of you who attend our evenings of discussion to consider attending this event with Ms. Johnson, to be held this Thursday at 7:30 PM at Kane Hall 130 on campus at UW. Lauded by thinkers such as C.S. Lewis for her profound Christian moral insight, English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) remains largely unappreciated, despite the many who still read her novels or watch the numerous films based on them.

Join us and our speaker Dr. Douglas Kries this Thursday, April 19, at 7:30pm at the UW Newman Center, for an evening of appreciation of Austen’s insights on politics, marriage, family, and religion, especially in her best known work, Pride and Prejudice.

How the Word Made Flesh Vanquishes Barbarism, Servility, and Despair

Thursday, February 23, 7:30 PM, at the UW Newman Center, 4502 20th Ave. NE, Seattle.

Many of you will remember last year’s evening of discussion with Professor Michael Matriotti on the spirituality of Russian monastics, their tradition of spiritual direction, and its amazing legacy. If you were there, you know the level of intensity, interest, and depth of spiritual reflection that Prof. Matriotti brings to his subject. To listen to this speaker is not merely to be informed, but to have one’s heart kindled.

Well, Professor Matriotti is back again to speak to us about Hilaire Belloc, author of The Servile State and many other works, advocate of distributism, and of course the dear friend of our hero, G. K. Chesterton.

“For Hilaire Belloc,” says Matriotti, “the doctrine of the Incarnation was not an abstraction but a palpable historical event affecting the reality of all things. “The Incarnation is the inspiration of the romanticism of the real so characteristic of Christian civilization. The loss of the sense of the reality of this historical event is destroying inevitably the ability to make traditions live anew, is bargaining away economic freedom, and is sapping the zest for life.”

January 19 event cancelled!

We regret that, owing to expected road and weather conditions, we must cancel Thursday’s event with Dr Christopher Kaczor, on “Pope Benedict on Happiness, Truth and Tolerance.”

Rest assured that Professor Kaczor will join us next season, when we will be able to offer him an especially warm welcome!
